The services and products we provide your patient are based on your written prescription for the following reasons:

  • Authorize Treatment:   Pedothists don't diagnose foot conditions or direct treatment in any way.   We take our direction from you the physician.   Therefore we need your authorization to provide treatment.
  • Effective Communication:  If we have your instructions in writing, we know exactly what to provide.  In addition, the written prescription becomes a permanent part of the patient's record – helping with follow-up care and monitoring patient progress.
  • Insurance Reimbursement:  We need written prescriptions so we can help your patients get reimbursement for our services.   Private insurance companies, HMO's, Worker's Compensation, Medicare and government assistance programs require a written prescription from a physician before they will provide coverage.

Guidelines to Writing Footwear Prescriptions...

While most physicians have written thousands of prescriptions for all kinds of medications, writing a prescription for footwear is quite different.   For your benefit we have put together the quick and easy guide below to help you make sure your patients get exactly the prescription footwear you they need. A physician's prescription should answer three questions

1.) Why does the patient need prescription footwear or related products?

  • State the diagnosis: Please tell us a much as you can about your patient's foot problem.  Our certified staff has been trained in foot anatomy and disease.  We are not as knowledgeable as a physician, but we will understand your diagnosis and use it to provide the best prescription footwear and related products possible.   If we are unsure about anything, we won't proceed without consulting you.

Be as specific as possible

Please include:

  • Any contributing systemic disease
  • Injury
  • Physical disability
  • Deformity
  • Post-operative condition

An example of what we're looking for:“Diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, recurrent planter ulcer under third metatarsal head of right foot.”

2.)  What do you want the prescription footwear to accomplish?

  • State the purpose of the footwear:  Please tell us what you would like the footwear to do for your patient.  Knowing the diagnosis is very helpful, but we also need to clearly understand the desired effect of purpose of the footwear.   Do you want it to relieve pain or pressure on some area of the foot?  Does the patient need support for a flexible deformity?   Is there a need to control the motion in a joint that's been injured?

An example of what we're looking for:“To relieve pressure on metatarsal heads.”

3.)   How do you want us to help your patient?

  • State the type of footwear needed: Please tell us what type of prescription footwear you want your patient to have.   Include as much information as you can about shoes, shoe modifications, and inserts or orthoses. Do you want a certain material used in the shoe upper?   Are the modifications required on both shoes or only on one?   The more you tell us, the better we can serve the patient.

  • The pedorthist can help: You may want to let us help you decide what type of footwear will work best.   We'll never know as much as you do about your patient's foot problem, but we do know pedorthics.  So you may want to let us decide which kind of material to use in an insert, or maybe what kind of rocker sole to add.   We’ll always follow your instructions, but if you'd like our help, just ask.
